Model Health Advice

Model Health Advice

At Kube Studios we are on our feet all day, and so are our clients. They know very well that modelling is one of the toughest jobs, as shown by a study on average incomes and hours worked. Very few models manage to make it to the upper tiers of the industry and the big money that comes with it. Kube Studios is a photography studio based in Manchester, Birmingham and London. They are not a modelling agency but can get you a professional modelling portfolio to use to apply to agencies.

There are many types of modelling that an aspiring model can hope to enter including fashion modelling, catwalk modelling and body parts modelling. All jobs require a model casting. One important concern when doing any job is the effects it has on your health. Effects from work can be psychological, stress, or physical. This post looks at some of the types of problems faced by models who wear the wrong shoes for their foot shape too often.

Callouses are thick and hard areas of skin caused by repeated rubbing on the skin. A callous is an area of hard, thickened skin on the foot that forms in response to pressure (the pressure of modelling), usually due to poor-fitting shoes. When pressure is concentrated in a small area a corn may develop. If the pressure is not relieved, calluses and corns can become painful and require treatment. This experience this happens particularly if your shoe doesn’t fit correctly or you wear uncomfortable heels for too long and too often. The body protects skin tissues from pressure or friction damage by producing an area of hard skin. So unless the reason for the pressure or friction is found and removed, calluses and corns will continue to form.

You can also get in growing toenails from tight high heels if the point of the shoe pushes your toes together too hard. Most people suffer from a foot problem at some point in their lives, and while many are fairly minor, some can be extremely painful and disabling. It is easy to let problems develop and by the time they arrive you suddenly find you can’t walk very easily.

What not to do in your Portfolio Photoshoot

Tips from Kube Studios

A strong modelling portfolio is the first step in any career progression in the modelling business. Kube Studios review hundreds of portfolios every week and see every mistake in the book over and over again. Visit the Kube Studios website for more information on portfolios. In this post let's look at some of the most common mistakes that models make when submitting their portfolios.

Sometimes its not clear who the actual subject of the photo is. Don't submit photos featuring anyone but yourself. As a standalone picture being presented to a client, they won't know who is who.

Kube Studios
Don't wear hats, sunglasses, or anything that draws attention away from you. Hiding your features is not a good idea. Men shouldn't wear make up. As above, it can hide positives and be misleading. Have a range of shots, head shots, full body shots, and body parts shots if you want to get into body parts modelling for catalogs or adverts.

If your portfolio is more on the home-made side, at least make sure the environment the photos are taken in is clean, light, airy and presentable. Many photos submitted are taken at night in dimly lit rooms, perhaps even as selfies, and these cannot be used in a professional modelling portfolio. Kube Studios strongly recommend having at least four professional photos in any portfolio.

Avoid these mistakes and you'll be on the right track. Find Kube Studios on tumblr and watch this video to find out about what Kube Studios can do for you!

How much do models get paid in the UK?

Depending on your stature in the modelling world daily rates start at £150-200 and go all the way up to the eye-watering figures we see in magazines, £10k+. An agency will take a cut of this of 10-25% but normally your travel and food expenses will be covered by the production company.

What about contracts?

Whether its for modelling, a job, or even a new phone any contract should be read very carefully and you should be absolutely certain what everything in it means. Some agencies or companies may use legal language, which isn't immediately understandable. If you're not sure, ask someone - don't just hope for the best. Exclusive modelling contracts limit the model to only working through that single agency for the duration - which is normally one year. If the agency doesn't pull its weight and find the model work then there's nothing they can do about it.

What can I do to boost my stature?

Start locally. Find out who matters in your town and introduce your self. Agencies can't do all the legwork for you, and often they're there as negotiators rather than a job agency. Your agency works for you as much as you work for them and a good portfolio can only go so far if you're behind your desk all day.

If you have what it takes to be a model, we can help give you the foundations to make your way. When coming in for your portfolio shoot we generally advise three outfit changes. On average, this is all there is time for without being in too much of a rush. Pick outfits that complement eachother but that show different things about you. A good start would be to pick one formal, for gents that could mean a smart blazer/open shirt combo, or for women a dinner dress or similar. One summery outfit is always a good idea, even if your shoot is in the winter. As a third option, think about what type of modelling you're most interested in and pick something suitable. Additionally, if you have tattoos, moisturise them beforehand to bring out the colour better in the photos. Top 3 Models Right Now

Top  Models Right Now

Models can reach the heights of wealth and stardom, but it is a long road full of hard work where nothing is guaranteed and millions fails every year. We scoured the globe for the best models in the World so here they are. Who are the top 5 models doing their thing right now according to Kube Studios? Active models young girls can look up to and be inspired?

Karlie Kloss

Karlie Elizabeth Kloss is an American fashion model. Models.com ranks Kloss as a supermodel. Karlie is currently 22 according to her birth date August 3, 1992. Vogue Paris declared her one of the top 30 models of the 2000s. She was a Victoria's Secret Angel from 2013-2015. She is pale and kind of gaunt and clothes look great on her. If you want to look like her, put the fork down and sit in a basement for around 3 months.

Martha Hunt

Martha Hunt is an American fashion model. She's mostly known for her work with Free People and for being a part of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2013 and 2014, and a Victoria's Secret Angel since 2015. North Carolina native Martha Hunt was discovered in Charlotte and brought to New York where she signed with IMG Models and walked her first runway in 2007 for Issey Miyake at New York Fashion Week. Having walked for designers like Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Giorgio Armani, and Diane Von Furstenberg, you’d probably know Hunt best for her work with Victoria’s Secret. She is also Taylor Swift's friend, her look however, can be seen on every high street of the UK.

Irina Shayk

Irina is truely hot and the only person to cheat on if your girlfriend is Adriana Lima. She is currently dating .... Bradley Cooper! I hate Bradley Cooper. So much.

Do you have what it takes to be a model?

Tips from Kube Studios

Kube Studios are one of the UK's top fashion photography portfolio and modeling studios. We have seen what it takes for someone to get out there and become a working model and also seen the mistakes that the majority of models make when trying to represent themselves.

Do you think you have that special something that can take you away from your day job and give you a new start? Most people who decide to try becoming a model begin with very low knowledge of the business and what the actual role entails. This isn't a bad thing, as long as you accept that you have a lot to learn. Here are some tips on what to remember when you're a model. Read more from Kube Studios.

Things to Remember!

- You work for your agency, and your agency works for you.

The idea that it is an agency's responsibility to find you work is out dated. It is in their interest, yes. But it should work both ways. Work to represent your self and, in Kube Studios experience, they will take more notice of you, perhaps pushing your modeling portfolio to the top of the pile more often.

- You are your own manager, employee, and marketer.

As with any form of self employment, you have to be everything at the same time. Learn about whats involved by looking at what other models are doing, and how they are representing themselves. You don't need to reinvent the wheel, the tactics are all plain to see - as long as you notice them and try to add them into your life style.

Preparing for your Portfolio Shoot

Many, particularly the young, models come to Kube Studios with a suitcase full of outfits. We advise our customers to bring 3-4 outfits only, because there simply isn't time for so many changes, but we also understand the excitement that surrounds a day in the studio. It's crucial to make sure that your outfits reflect the type of model you want to be represented as - you can't change the photos once they're taken so choose outfits that you know you'll still like in six months time when you're still using the same portfolio. It's a very good idea to have a mixture - eg. 1x trouser suit, 1x dress, 1x skirt/top. For men, a combination of casual, a smart-casual, and a suit tend to give a great, rounded portfolio. If for example your portfolio ends up on the desk of someone looking for a model for a whisky advertisement, a man in a suit will more likely fit the role over one in a t-shirt. It's obvious in that sense, right?

In Kube Studios' experience, the best portfolio days are when the model has chosen a distinct look, and matches the other looks to compliment it. This way, when a scout or manager is leafing through your portfolio, there aren't major differences from one page to the next - nothing jumps out as being out of place. If you have questions about becoming a model, or would like to find out more about modelling portfolios, please visit our website and watch the Kube Studios video below.

Kube Studios Tips for Photographers

Kube Studios Tips for Photographers

When you are faced with managing a shoot for the first time, it can be quite a scary experience. In our experience, people get easily flustered and focus on the details rather than the matter at hand. Here are some tips from Kube Studios on how to manage yourself, the models and the team on your first shoot.

The first point to consider is whether the model knows what they are doing, and the purpose of the shoot. If he or she is a first timer hoping to get into fashion modelling then you will manage the situation differently to if it is a professional working for an advertising campaign. Once you know this, your job gets easier. Do they need a nudge, or do they need more? To get the best results you should speak your mind without being condescending or coming off as being angry, no matter how frustrating it might be! Beginners need nurturing, rather than being told off. If the subject is making mistakes, point them out in a nice way and see how they react.

Kube Studios

Make sure your gear is all prepped well before you are due to start. At Kube Studios, all gear is prepared the night before in most cases and double checked in the morning to make sure that appointments run to schedule. There is nothing worse than hardware failure delaying a shoot. At best, it looks unprofessional, and at worst it will lose you a customer and their friends. In a business like photography that, to some extent, relies on referrals, one bad experience can have an impact on the following months. Bearing this in mind, Kube Studios strive to provide the best results and full experience to all clients and customers. If you want to find out more about our London flagship studio, visit the Kube Studios London section of our website and watch the video below. Get in touch through our website or over the phone for booking enquirires and have a great week!
